The Magic Beneath the Surface
Melbourne artist Meg Cowell is known for the alchemy that occurs when she lowers a gown into water. Fabric lifts and breathes as if an unseen spirit has stepped inside it, transforming an ordinary dress into an apparition or a memory made visible.
Clients often say she “enchants” their gowns. When Kelly entrusted Cowell with her wedding dress- its delicate flowers cascading through the fabric- the submerged garment revealed not just its details, but a sense of Kelly’s own playful, bubbling joy.
Cowell’s work is ultimately about transformation. Families often gather around her finished pieces, finding that the image becomes a portal back into the moment, sparking stories and emotion.
Behind the magic lies a humble setup: a thousand-litre paddling pool draped in black cloth, scaffolding overhead, and Cowell coaxing each gown gently into motion. Every dress is returned restored and unharmed- despite the frequent question, “Won’t the water ruin it?”
Her artworks become meeting points where gown, memory, and water entwine- keepsakes meant not for storage, but for display, shimmering with life.
